Top Timing Cover (Range Rover 3)

The described sequence of operations covers the work with the upper covers of the timing drive, both right and left heads.

Dismantling

1. Remove the valve cover of the cylinder head.

V8 engine, ENGINE OVERHAUL, Valve cover gasket.

2. Remove the camshaft adjuster solenoid valve.

V8 Engine, ENGINE OVERHAUL, Variable Valve Timing (VCC).

3. Turn away a bolt of fastening of the gauge of position of a cam-shaft and remove the gauge. Dispose of the O-ring.

4. Turn away a bolt of fastening of a hose of system of afterburning to the right head of cylinders.

5. Turn away a bolt of fastening of a hose of system of afterburning to the left head of cylinders.

6. Turn away a bolt of fastening of the collar supporting a hose of system of afterburning, from the pump of system of cooling.

7. Remove the afterburner hoses from the cylinder heads and lay them aside, discard the O-rings.

Disassembly

1. Upper timing cover for the right cylinder head. Unscrew the 2 bolts securing the RFG solenoid valve stuffing box cover and remove the stuffing box.

2. The upper cover of the timing drive of the right cylinder head. Remove the chain tensioner from the timing cover and discard the sealing washer.

3. The upper cover of the timing drive of the right cylinder head. Separate the hydraulic part of the tensioner and let the oil drain.

4. The upper cover of the timing drive of the right cylinder head. Unscrew the 2 bolts securing the engine harness bracket on the upper front timing cover of the right cylinder head and remove the bracket.

5. Turn away 2 bolts of fastening of two arms on the top forward cover of GRM and remove arms.

6. Turn away 6 bolts of fastening of a cover of a drive of GRM to a head of cylinders and remove a cover.

7. Dispose of the timing cover gasket.

NOTE: If disassembly was carried out only to provide access to other elements of the system, then further disassembly operations should not be performed.

8. Turn away a bolt of fastening of the gauge of position of a cam-shaft and remove the gauge.

9. Dispose of the o-ring.

Examination

1. Wipe the camshaft position sensor and mating surfaces.

Assembly

1. Install a new O-ring on the camshaft position sensor.

2. Install the camshaft position sensor, screw in the bolt and tighten it to 10 Nm.

3. Wipe the timing cover and mating surface, pins and pin sockets.

4. Turn away a bolt of fastening of the gauge of position of a cam-shaft and remove the gauge.

5. Apply STC 50550 sealant to the locations indicated in the figure.

6. Insert the lower bolt into the right timing cover and install the cover on the cylinder head.

NOTE: It will not be possible to insert the bottom bolt into the right timing cover after installing the left one.

7. Screw in the remaining 5 bolts and tighten by hand all 6 bolts securing the upper timing cover.

8. Put the mandrel LRT-12-225/2 on the valve cover of the left cylinder head.

9. Install the valve cover with the mandrel, screw in the 4 bolts and tighten them to 10 Nm.

10. Tighten the timing cover bolts to 15 Nm.

11. Install 2 brackets on the timing cover, screw in the bolts and tighten them.

12. Turn away 4 bolts of fastening of a valvate cover, remove a valve cover with mandrel LRT-12-225/2.

13. The upper cover of the timing drive of the right cylinder head. Install a new sealing washer, install the chain tensioner and tighten the cap of the chain tensioner to 40 Nm.

14. Top cover of the timing drive of the right cylinder head. Wipe the VCC solenoid valve on the right cylinder head and mating surfaces.

15. Upper timing cover for right cylinder head. Lubricate the inner mating surface of the VCC valve seal.

16. The upper cover of the timing drive of the right cylinder head. Install the solenoid valve seal, screw in the bolts and tighten them.

Assembly

1. Install 2 new O-rings on the afterburner hose and lay the hose on the engine. Screw in 3 bolts of fastening of a hose of system of afterburning and tighten them with the moment of 10 Н·м.

2. Install the left camshaft adjuster solenoid valve.
