The first prototype was built in 1967. Until 1970, about 40 cars with the name Velar were created so that competitors would not guess anything ahead of time. Structurally, it resembled American SUVs of that time.
When you first see this car up close, your first thought will be - "how big he is!" In the first 2 years, it was almost impossible to buy it due to the huge demand, on this hype "warmed hands" speculators.
The first cars of the first generation had 3 doors. This design is much stronger than a five-door car, which allowed the Range Rover to be a very reliable and safe car. It originally began to install disc brakes. They wanted to make not a permanent all-wheel drive, but a plug-in one, but the torque from the powerful engine of the American Buick company was too large and the rear axle could not withstand it.
Long-stroke suspension on shock absorbers and coil springs. It allowed large lateral vibrations, which gave both high cross-country ability and comfort when driving on the highway.
The gearbox was originally a four-speed, transfer case - with a normal and reduced gear ratio. At first, a friction clutch was placed on the center differential, but then they began to make a forced lock. Until 1973, the steering was without power. In 16.6 seconds, it accelerated to 100 km / h, which corresponded to modern cars at that time. Top speed 155 km/h and weight 1724 kg.
At first it was a fairly simple and utilitarian SUV - there was no air conditioning, rich trim, automatic transmission. They even made fire engines and ambulances. The first to redesign the concept and design of the car was the Swiss Peter Monteverdi. He slightly reduced the clearance, put alloy wheels, trimmed the interior with leather and installed under the hood, instead of the Buick engine, a large Chrysler engine with a volume of 5.2 liters and a power of 152 hp. There was also a more charged modification - a 7.2-liter engine with a capacity of 300 hp. This model called Monteverdi Safari.
In 1980, the company tried to conquer the American market. First of all, the engine was finalized by installing electronic fuel injection instead of carburetors. This reduced fuel consumption and kept within America's environmental law limits. Then the designers worked on the car.
In 1987, Range Rover officially appeared in dealerships in America. Standard equipment included air conditioning, a four-speed automatic, cruise control, a power sunroof and other novelties at the time.
In 1992, the most important modification of the car - air suspension. Now the car can be accelerated to high speeds without sacrificing cross-country ability. When driving on asphalt, the suspension reduced the car's ground clearance, as if clinging to the asphalt, and when driving off-road, the ground clearance increased.
There were 4 generations of Range Rovers in total:
- I - from 1970 to 1996
- II - from 1994 to 2002
- III - from 2002 to 2012
- IV - since 2012
The closest competitors are the following vehicles from other automakers: Audi Q7, BMW X6, Chevrolet Tahoe, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Lexus GX, Mercedes-Benz G-Class, Mitsubishi Pajero, Nissan Patrol, Porsche Cayenne and Toyota Land Cruiser.
