The starter is rated at 2.0kW and is manufactured by Denso as a sealed gear only unit. Starter type RA, the design of which is based on the offset of the axes of the starter and gear. The solenoid is located directly behind the gear to provide a more stable mesh with the flywheel ring gear. The electric motor is directly connected to the planetary gear, it is a pre-loaded unit that includes a series excitation motor and a slip clutch.
The starter is mounted on the left side of the flywheel housing and secured with three fasteners. The pinion protrudes through the opening to drive the flywheel with a ring gear.
Small diameter wire connected between engine control module (ECM) and solenoid valve. The solenoid valve is powered by a voltage signal from the ECM when the starter switch is pressed. When a crank request is received, the ECM will allow the crank request after checking to see if a valid mobilization code has been received. The starter is powered by a large diameter cable that is connected to the positive battery terminal. The wire is protected by a hermetically sealed 'CAL3' type fuse located on the wire on the battery side. The cable is fixed to the electromagnet by means of a terminal anti-rotation device and a nut.
