TD4_e features Land Rover's first intelligent system "Stop/Start". The system automatically shuts down and restarts the vehicle engine under certain conditions. This reduces engine idling time, reducing fuel consumption and reducing emissions. This is very useful for vehicles that spend a lot of time in heavy traffic, such as:
- waiting at traffic lights
- frequent traffic jams
Advantages of this technology compared to the previous TD4 engine vehicle without the system "Stop/Start", based on the official definition "European Driving Cycle", the following:
- The level of CO2 emissions is reduced by almost 8 percent compared to the standard EU4 driving cycle, which corresponds to a reduction of 15 g/km.
- Fuel consumption has decreased by 3.8 mpg or 0.6 liters for every 62 miles / 100 km.
NOTE: Fuel consumption and emission reductions vary depending on driving style and road conditions.
System "Stop/Start" standard on vehicles with manual transmission. It is automatically activated every time the ignition is switched on. However, the driver can deactivate the system by pressing the button "Eco" on the control panel.
Switch "Eco" systems "Stop/Start":
NOTE: In addition to the automatic system "Stop/Start" button "Eco" also controls the shift indicator system.
For more information, see chapter: Instrument panel (413-01 Instrument panel, Description and function).
Turn on the LED in the button "Eco" indicates the correct operation of the system "Stop/Start". The LED goes out in the following cases:
- The driver turns off the system "Stop/Start".
- HDC system works (downhill control) or TR (Terrain Response).
- The system is faulty; for more information refer to the section "System malfunction" below.
In ECM (engine control module) added new software that controls the operation of the automatic system "Stop/Start", because in addition to its own components, the automatic system "Stop/Start" connected to many other vehicle systems. Sophisticated technology connects these systems and ensures that all the necessary conditions are present, controlling, among others, the following parameters:
- clutch pedal position
- gear selector position
- speed of movement condition of the most important vehicle systems
- environmental conditions
If all the necessary conditions are met, the system "Stop/Start" automatically turns off the engine in the following cases:
- the car is stationary
- neutral included
- clutch pedal fully depressed
The illumination of the icon indicates that the engine has been switched off "Eco" on the instrument panel. Other Warnings Commonly Related to Engine Shutdown (e.g. ignition and low oil pressure indicators) are blocked, so when the engine is turned off in the mode "Stop/Start" they don't turn on.
Indicator "Eco" systems "Stop/Start":
The engine will automatically restart when the clutch pedal is released before shifting into gear. At this moment the icon "Eco" on the instrument panel will go out. If the conditions necessary for the operation of the system do not pass the ECM check, the system "Stop/Start" won't work as expected, for example:
- System interlock: the engine will continue to run even if the vehicle is stationary, the gear is in neutral and the clutch pedal is fully depressed.
- System bypass: engine shut down by system "Stop/Start", however conditions have changed and this will cause the engine to restart automatically earlier.
This intervention prevents the negative impact of the system "Stop/Start" to the following:
- vehicle and passenger safety
- driver requests
- driver and passenger comfort
- on-road and off-road capabilities of the vehicle
Although the main control logic of the system "Stop/Start" concentrated in ECM, CJB (central electrical box) also received an updated software for transmitting engine shutdown interlock signals to the ECM. In some cases, depending on the reason for the intervention of the system, a message about the reasons will be displayed on the information panel screen. See the message table below for more details.
Conditions affecting the operation of the automatic system "Stop/Start", are described further in the section "Stop interlocks, start activators and start interlocks".
WARNING: To prevent personal injury when repairing vehicles, be sure to disable the automatic system "Stop/Start" at the touch of a button "ECO"; make sure the information bar shows a message "System "Stop/Start" off", and the ECO indicator in the switch is off.
