The ignition system of the 3.2L Si6 engine has one iridium-tipped spark plug per cylinder, with each spark plug powered by an associated ignition coil. The ignition coils are controlled directly by the ECM.
The ignition coils are powered by the power relay through the fuse in the BJB. To suppress radio interference, a capacitor is installed in parallel with the power circuit of the ignition coils.
Each ignition coil has an amplifying stage for switching the power supply to the primary winding of the coil. The ECM controls the switching with a signal applied to the cascade. The ECM monitors the operation of the ignition coils using a feedback signal from each amplifier stage. If a malfunction is detected, the ECM stores the appropriate DTC in memory.
Depending on the battery voltage and engine speed, the ECM adjusts the duration of the closed state of the primary winding to ensure that the energy of the discharge generated in the secondary winding is constant with each switching of the amplifier stage. This allows for good sparking without overloading the primary circuit by current and overheating of the ignition coils.
The ECM calculates the ignition timing for the cylinders based on the following data:
- Engine speed
- Camshaft position
- Engine load
- Coolant temperature
- Knock control function
- On models with automatic transmission, shift control function
- Idling requirements are taken into account
