Fuel tank design (Freelander 2)
The fuel tank has a usable capacity of 68.0 litres, and has a burn out strategy to prevent air from entering the high pressure fuel system. The tank is made of six-layer laminated plastic by blow molding, which provides high mechanical strength and complete tightness in terms of the release of harmful substances into the atmosphere. The fuel tank is a sealed unit with internal access through a fuel delivery module opening located on the right side of the tank.
The fuel tank is located in the center, below the rear seat, and is located, like a saddle, on top of the driveshaft and exhaust system elements.
The fuel tank is attached to the vehicle with a support saddle and 6 bolts. When the saddle is attached to the chassis, the tank is rigidly fixed through foam pads that fit snugly against the bottom of the car. The seat is made of steel and includes a large diameter steel piping to protect the bottom from damage from the leading edge of the fuel tank. The saddle also provides space for the parking brake cable brackets.
A saddle heat shield is attached to the seat to protect the fuel tank from the heat generated in the exhaust system.
