To prevent the accumulation of gases in the engine crankcase, the crankcase gases of the engine are drawn into the oil separator, where oil particles are removed from the gases. The oil then flows into the engine oil sump and the gases are directed to the engine air intake system.
The positive crankcase ventilation valve operates before oil-free gases are introduced into the air intake system (PCV), to minimize crankcase pressure variations caused by engine air demand and engine operating conditions.
