Leaks
Symptom | Possible reason | Action |
External coolant leaks | About leaks in the cooling system. For more information refer to: Engine Cooling (303-03B Engine Cooling - 2.2L Duratorq - Td4, Diagnostics and checks).
Internal coolant leaks. Note: This may be indicated by white smoke coming from the exhaust pipe | Check for the presence of coolant in the engine oil and vice versa. Check for exhaust gases escaping from the top tank. Regarding additional checks of the cooling system. For more information refer to: Engine Cooling (303-03B Engine Cooling - 2.2L Duratorq - Td4, Diagnosis and Checks).
The engine gets very hot | Check that the coolant/engine oil level is correct. About leaks in the cooling system. For more information refer to: Engine Cooling (303-03B Engine Cooling - 2.2L Duratorq - Td4, Diagnosis and Checks).
Too long engine warm-up to reach operating temperature | Thermostat stuck open | About leaks in the cooling system. For more information refer to: Engine Cooling (303-03B Engine Cooling - 2.2L Duratorq - Td4, Diagnosis and Checks). |
Outdoor oil leaks | Clean up the leak area and make sure it is properly identified. Visually check the condition of the oil circuit elements. Check the forced crankcase ventilation system. For more information, see: Emission Control (303-08B Emission Control - 2.2L Duratorq - Td4, Diagnostics and checks). Perform a compression test, Go to PINPOINT TEST A.
Internal oil leaks (leaks in the coolant circuit or combustion chamber). Note: This may be indicated by blue smoke coming from the exhaust pipe | Check for traces of oil in the coolant. Check for oil in combustion chambers (deposits on glow plugs, etc.) Verify that the oil flow and vehicle operation is correct by the owner/driver. Perform an oil flow check, Go to PINPOINT-TEST B. |
NOTE: Since the checks suggested here are open to interpretation, they should only be used as a guide to action. The description of noises, etc., is given in general terms, so the effectiveness of the diagnosis depends largely on the experience of the mechanic.

Symptom | Possible reason | Action |
Rattle/tick coming from the top of the engine | Check engine oil level and pressure, Go to PINPOINT-TEST C. Check the operation of the hydraulic tappets and the condition of the camshaft lobes and bearings. Check timing chains and tensioners, vacuum pump and high pressure fuel pump. Check injectors for leaks.
Squealing/squealing/squeaking coming from the front of the engine. | Check the accessory drive belt and belt driven components. For more information refer to: Drive accessories (303-05B Accessory Drive - 2.2L Duratorq - Td4, Diagnostics and Checks).
A whine/pop/rumble coming from the front of the engine. | Check the accessory drive belt and belt driven components. For more information refer to: Drive accessories (303-05B Accessory Drive - 2.2L Duratorq - Td4, Diagnostics and Checks). Check the timing belt and tensioners for noise/damage.
Knocking sound coming from the bottom of the engine (often the condition worsens on a cold engine) | Check engine oil level and pressure, Go to PINPOINT-TEST C. Check for the presence of foreign inclusions in the engine oil, check the condition of the engine elements.
Knock/hum from underside of engine (often worsens with deceleration/engine braking) | Check engine oil level and pressure, Go to PINPOINT-TEST C. Check for the presence of foreign inclusions in the engine oil, check the condition of the engine elements.
Howl/whistling | Check air intake system components for looseness/damage Check for excessive "swimming" turbocharger shaft Note: small "swimming" turbocharger shaft - this is normal and quite acceptable. Check the turbocharger for general damage.
Misfire/Rough Operation | About electronic engine controls. For more information see: Electronic Controls (303-14B Electronic Controls - 2.2L Duratorq - Td4, Diagnostics and Tests). Regarding checks of the fuel supply system and related controls. For more information, see: Fuel supply and controls (303-04B Fuel supply and controls - 2.2L Duratorq - Td4, Diagnostics and checks). Check air intake system for damage/leaks. For EGR system checks. For more information, see: Emission Control (303-08B Emission Control - 2.2L Duratorq - Td4, Diagnostics and checks). Check for damaged engine components. Perform a compression test, Go to PINPOINT TEST A. |
