The cylinder head and camshaft cover are manufactured as mating elements. These elements are jointly milled and precisely positioned using two adjusting sleeves. These two elements can only be installed in pairs, their separate replacement is not allowed. The cylinder head and camshaft cover are sealed against each other during assembly with a gasket and silicone-based sealant and are secured with 27 bolts. An oil seal mounted at the front of the cylinder head seals the exhaust camshaft housing. The open ports at the rear of the cylinder head are sealed by vacuum pump and high pressure fuel pump O-rings.
Two adjusting sleeves ensure the correct positioning of the cylinder head and gasket relative to the cylinder block. The cylinder head is fixed to the cylinder block with 10 recessed bolts.
NOTE: The cylinder head bolts are not accessible when the camshaft cover is installed.
NOTE: Re-machining of the cylinder head is not permitted.
The cylinder head is made of aluminum alloy, the seats and valve guides are made of sintered steel. The cylinder head is precision machined and houses four combustion chambers, lower camshaft bearing shells, oil passages and coolant galleries, and air intake, valve train and fuel system openings and housings.
The design of the cylinder head ensures maximum air supply and vortex formation in the combustion chambers. The two intake valve seats have raised sections that help swirl the intake air. Combined with the intake manifold's spiral port action, the swirl effect of the two intake port profiles ensures that air and injected fuel are completely mixed and flow to the outer edge of the combustion chamber.
The camshaft cover is made of aluminum alloy, its upper surface is machined together with the camshaft upper bearing housings. The cover also has four air passages, mounting holes for fuel injectors and holes for the PCV elements of the cylinder head cover. Air intake ducts connect the air intake manifold to the cylinder head intake charging ports.
The cylinder head also serves as the installation location for the following elements:
- Front engine mount
- Front and rear engine lifting eyes
- intake and exhaust manifolds
- EGR valve and heat exchanger
- Fuel filter support bracket
- Temperature control module
- Vacuum pump and high pressure fuel pump
