The dual electric fan assembly is mounted on the fan shroud and attached to the rear of the radiator. The fans draw air through the radiator to regulate coolant temperature and supply cooling air to the engine compartment.
The fans are controlled by the appropriate control module, which receives a pulse-width modulated signal from the ECM with a pulse duty cycle of 0 - 100%. The ECM changes the PWM signal based on input from various sensors. The fan control module uses the PWM signal to determine the required output voltage for the two cooling fan motors.
For more information see the chapter: Electronic Engine Controls - 2.2L Diesel (303-14 Electronic Engine Controls - 2.2L Diesel, Description and function).
Under certain operating conditions and with the ignition off, the fans continue to operate under the control of the ECM to provide engine cooling.
