The AW F21 is an electronically controlled 6-speed automatic transmission manufactured by Aisin AW in Japan. This gearbox reflects the latest technology in the field of automatic transmissions for transverse all-wheel drive (AWD) aggregates. This gearbox has lock-up slip control (slip lock control), 'CommandShift™' functions, automatic and driver-selectable modes for optimal on-road and off-road performance.
The transmission is controlled by the TCM, which contains software that controls the operation of the semi-automatic mode "CommandShift™". The TCM allows the transmission to be operated like a conventional automatic transmission by placing the selector lever in P, R, N, or D. Moving the selector across the rocker to "M/S" switches the transmission to electronic mode "Sport". Further movement of the lever in the longitudinal direction, to the + or - position, puts the gearbox into electronic mechanical mode "CommandShift™".
For more information, see the chapter: External controls (307-05 External controls for automatic transmission/transaxle transaxle, Description and function).
The AW F21 gearbox has the following features:
- Maintenance free
- Torque overload capacity: 450 Nm
- Transmission oil filled for the entire period of operation
- The torque converter has a controlled slip function with electronically controlled lock-up control in gears 2 - 6
- Shift control programs are selected by the TCM
- TCM is adaptable and delivers high shift quality throughout the life of the transmission
- TCM diagnostic resources available via high speed CAN bus
