Transmission malfunction (Freelander 2)

If the TCM detects a transmission failure, it will go into emergency transmission control mode to avoid damage to the transmission and maintain the vehicle's self-driving capability. If possible, reverse gear will be available, as well as only 3rd gear.

Upon detecting a malfunction, the TCM sends a message to the instrument cluster using the high speed CAN bus. Instrument panel includes MIL warning light (if it is needed) and displays the corresponding message on the information center display.

Certain transmission faults do not result in the MIL being illuminated or a fault message being displayed, but the driver may notice a reduction in shift quality.
