WARNING: The vehicle must not be driven if the transmission fluid level is low as this may cause an internal malfunction.
NOTE: When checking the transmission fluid level, the fluid temperature must be within 50°C (122°F) - 60°C (140°F). If the temperature exceeds this value, stop checking and allow the transmission fluid to cool.
This vehicle is not equipped with a fluid level indicator. Incorrect transmission fluid levels can affect transmission performance and damage the transmission.
To properly check and add fluid to the transmission: For more information, refer to: (307-01 Automatic transmission / transaxle) Checking the transmission fluid level - 3.2L NA - I6 (General procedures), Checking the transmission fluid level - 2.2L Duratorq - Td4 (General procedures).
Checking the condition of the transmission fluid
Use the following procedure to check the condition of the transmission fluid, which is a good indicator of the internal condition of the transmission:
1. Check fluid level.
2. Pay attention to the color and smell of the liquid. In the normal state, the color of the liquid should be reddish, not brown or black. If in doubt, compare the fluid with that from a new sealed container.
3. Let the liquid drip onto a paper towel and look at the stain.
4. If there are signs of hard material, the gearbox oil pan should be removed (for transmission fluid) for further examination.
