FEAD belt tensioner
Static check
The only checks required for the FEAD belt tensioner are for binding or seizing.
- Remove the drive belt in the tensioner area.
- Using the correct tool, move the tensioner from the released position to full travel and back to the released position to ensure that there is no excessive sticking or sticking and that there is tension on the tensioner spring.
- If the tensioner meets these criteria, proceed to a dynamic check. If the tensioner does not meet these criteria, install a new tensioner. For more information, refer to: Accessory Drive Belt Tensioner (303-05B Accessory drive - 2.2L Duratorq - Td4, Removal and installation).
Dynamic Check
The FEAD belt tensioner can be checked dynamically by proceeding as follows:
- With the engine running, observe the movement of the drive belt tensioner: the FEAD belt tensioner should move (to react), when the A/C compressor clutch engages/disengages (in the presence of) and when the engine speed increases rapidly. If the movement of the drive belt tensioner is erratic without cycling the A/C compressor clutch or accelerating the engine, the pulley or shaft may be deformed. Excessive unevenness in the depth of the grooves in the belt can cause excessive movement of the drive belt tensioner. Test the problem condition by installing a known-good belt. For more information refer to: Accessory Drive Belt (303-05B Accessory drive - 2.2L Duratorq - Td4, Removal and installation).
FEAD belt
- With the engine off, check the drive belt wiring. For more information refer to: Drive accessories (303-05B Accessory drive - 2.2L Duratorq - Td4, Description and function).
- Inspect the drive belt tensioner wear indicator to ensure that the drive belt is within operating range. Install a new drive belt if necessary. For more information refer to: Accessory Drive Belt (303-05B Accessory drive - 2.2L Duratorq - Td4, Removal and installation).
