During normal use, batteries emit an explosive gas called hydrogen, which can cause an explosion and serious injury. In this regard, do not allow sparking and the presence of open flames in the engine compartment.
DO NOT attempt to start a car that will not start if you suspect that the electrolyte in the battery has frozen.
Wear eye protection when working in the immediate vicinity of the battery.
Use caution when working near rotating engine parts.
Before attempting to start a car that won't start, make sure the parking brake is on and there are chocks under the wheels. Make sure the automatic transmission is in 'P' - PARK, the manual transmission is in neutral.
Before connecting and disconnecting wires and subsequent use of electrical equipment, make sure that all consumers of electrical energy are in the OFF position (TURNED OFF).
Verify that the DONOR vehicle battery voltage is 12V and that all electrical consumers of the non-starting vehicle are in the OFF position before connecting the wires (TURNED OFF).
Make sure there is no contact between the donor car and the non-starting car other than through wires.
NOTE: Disconnect the battery: If the remote control does not work, you will need to unlock the car with the key.
Follow the steps below in the given order:
- 1. Connect the end of the red (+) cable to positive terminal (+) battery of a vehicle that is NOT STARTED.
- 2. Connect the other end of the red (+) cable to positive terminal (+) the battery of the DONOR vehicle.
- 3. Connect the black end (-) cable to ground terminal (-) the battery of the DONOR vehicle.
- 4. Connect the other end of the black (-) cable to a reliable ground source, such as an unpainted metal surface or engine mount, at least 0.5 m away (20 inches) from the battery or fuel lines of a vehicle that is NOT STARTED.
- 5. Start the DONOR vehicle engine and let it idle for a few minutes.
- 6. Start the engine of a vehicle that is NOT STARTED.
- 7. Run the engines of both vehicles for a few minutes, then shut off the engine of the DONOR vehicle.
- 8. Detach black (-) cable from the ground of a PREVIOUSLY UNSTART car.
- 9. Detach black (-) cable from the battery of the DONOR vehicle.
- 10. Detach red (+) cable from the battery of the DONOR vehicle.
- 11. Detach red (+) cable from the battery of a PREVIOUSLY UNSTART car.
