Table of fault signs (Freelander 2)

Symptom	Possible reason	Action
Constant noise level over a narrow range of vehicle speeds. Can usually be heard in light driving conditions or when coasting	Rear drive axle	For more information. Go to PINPOINT TEST A.
The noise is the same when driving in gear and when coasting	road noise Worn or damaged cardan shaft joint Intermediate support for cardan shaft wheel bearing Normal conditions (road noise)	Check and install new elements if necessary. For more information refer to: 205-01 Propeller shaft, Removal and installation, Rear wheel bearing (204-02 Rear suspension, Removal and installation), Front wheel bearing (204-01 Front suspension, Removal and installation).
Noise is heard when the car is stationary and in motion	Engine Transmission	For more information. Loud clanking in transmission when shifting from reverse to forward	Gearbox calibration Gearbox support Transmission Suspension elements Side clearance in transmission Idle speed set too high engine support	Using the manufacturer approved diagnostic system, reconfigure the transmission control module (TCM), using the latest available calibration version Check and install new transmission mounts if necessary For transmission diagnostics. For more information refer to: Diagnostics (307-01 Automatic transmission / transmission in the block with the leading axle, Diagnostics and checks). Check and, if necessary, install new suspension elements Check and, if necessary, install new transmission elements Check and, if necessary, adjust the idle speed Check and install new engine mounts if necessary
Clicking, crackling or grinding	Insufficient or contaminated lubrication of the CV joints of the front / rear axle shafts Another element is in contact with the front/rear axle shaft Wheel bearings, brake or suspension components	Inspect, clean and, if necessary, lubricate with new grease Make sure that no other elements are in contact with the front/rear axle shaft Check and install new elements if necessary
Vibration at high speeds	Wheel imbalance (A) or tires (s) Skewed/unbalanced propeller shaft Intermediate propshaft bearing touches body reference point	Balance and install new if necessary (s) wheel (A) or tire (s). Trembling, vibration during acceleration	Powertrain/Transmission Misalignment Exceeding the operating angles of CV joints caused by incorrect ride height	Check for powertrain/transmission misalignment and repair as necessary. Install new items as needed Check ride height and correct spring characteristics. Install new items as needed
Lubricant leak	Rear drive axle breather Seal damage Filler plug for rear drive axle Rear Drive Axle Cover/Active Clutch Pivot	Check and, if necessary, correct the oil level Install a new driveshaft/pinion seal if necessary.
