Howl and roar of gears
Mechanical whining or roaring from the ring gear and pinion gear is caused by improper meshing, damaged gears, or improper bearing preload.
Howl bearing
The whine of a bearing is a high-pitched whistle-like sound. It is usually caused by worn/damaged drive gear bearings that are running at the same speed as the propeller shaft. Bearing noise occurs at all speeds. This distinguishes it from the whine of gears, which depends on speed.
As already noted, pinion bearings make a high-pitched, whistling sound, usually at all speeds. However, if there is only one worn/damaged pinion bearing, the noise may vary in different phases of the drive.
Wheel bearing noise can be mistaken for pinion bearing noise.
A sound similar to clucking
This sound, which occurs during the coasting phase, is usually caused by excessive clearance between the differential hub and the differential housing bore.
Damage to the ring gear on the non-working side can cause a noise similar to clucking. A very small dent or ridge on the edge of a tooth can cause noise.
Knock
Knocking, which can occur in all phases of movement, has several causes, including damage to the teeth or gears.
A gear tooth that is damaged on the drive side is the most common cause of knocking.
Clang
Clanging - a metallic noise heard when the automatic transmission is in reverse gear (REVERSE) or transfer of motion (DRIVE). Noise may also occur when opening or closing the throttle. The clanging noise is caused by gearbox calibration, transmission play, or loose suspension components. A clanking noise can be felt or heard in the area of the rear drive axle.
Bearing screen
The rumble of the bearing is similar to the sound of falling glass balls. This condition is usually caused by a worn/damaged wheel bearing. The lower tone is due to the fact that the wheel bearing rotates at a speed equal to only 1/3 of the propeller shaft speed. Wheel bearing noise can also be high pitched, similar to gear noise, but will appear in all four driving modes.
