Review
The Terrain Response™ system allows the driver to select a program that provides the right grip and vehicle dynamics for the given road conditions. It is not possible to turn off the system. A program that provides for the disabling of special programs ("Special Programs off"), is active by default and is suitable for all normal driving conditions. Three special programs cover all kinds of surfaces.
The system is controlled by a rotary knob located on the center console, in front of the gear selector lever. You can select one of four programs using the rotary knob:
- Special programs off (Special programs disabled).
- Grass/Gravel/Snow (program «Grass/gravel/snow»).
- Mud/Ruts (program «mud/ruts»).
- Sand (program «Sand»).
The rotary control can be rotated 360 degrees and further to either side for sequential program selection. If the vehicle is equipped with Terrain Response, it also has a high-level instrument panel with a message center that displays the selected program.
The Terrain Response system integrates a number of subsystems to ensure vehicle performance is appropriate for the selected surface. The Terrain Response system uses the following subsystems:
- Engine control system.
- Automatic transmission (in the presence of).
- Clutch active on request
- Brake system (ABS/DSC/ETC/HDC functions).
The rotary control switch block also houses the Terrain Response control module. The control module determines the selected position of the rotary control and transmits a signal on the high speed CAN bus, which is received by the control modules of each subsystem. Each of these control modules contains software that enters the correct operating parameters in the controlled system, taking into account the selected Terrain Response mode. In addition, the control modules provide feedback within the selected program, which allows the Terrain Response system control module to control the transition of all systems to the correct operating parameters.
Information is sent to the driver as a message on the message center display, which is located on the instrument panel. The report tells about what measures the driver can take to optimize the dynamic performance of the car, taking into account driving conditions.
The Terrain Response system's automatic assistance and information on the display will be especially useful to the driver who does not have off-road experience. An experienced driver can choose special programs for extreme conditions, allowing you to control the operation of vehicle systems (e.g. throttle, gearshift or traction control parameters), which is not possible on vehicles not equipped with Terrain Response.
Vehicles equipped with the system "Stop/Start" - starting from MY 2010
When you turn on the special programs of the Terrain Response system, the system "Stop/Start" turns off.
However, if the Terrain Response system is activated when the engine is turned off in "Stop/Start", the engine will automatically restart. If at this time the system "Stop/Start" does not detect the driver in place, for example, if the driver's seat belt is not fastened or the door is open, the engine does not restart. System "Stop/Start" prompts the driver to press the clutch pedal to start the engine. When this happens, a message appears on the message center screen "RESTART REQUIRED PRESS CLUTCH" (Restart required, hit the clutch).
