NOTE: If the steering is sluggish or there is contamination in the power steering system, the system flush procedure should be followed as detailed below. If any items have been replaced in the power steering system, the procedure described below must be completed in its entirety.
NOTE: The illustrations may differ in some details, but the fundamental points are completely true.
1. Remove the power steering reservoir cap.
2. Using a suitable syringe, remove the working fluid from the power steering reservoir.
3. Disconnect the power steering reservoir.
CAUTION: Fluid may leak.
NOTE: Mark the position of the clamp.
4. Disconnect but do not remove the power steering reservoir.
5. Release the power steering return hose from the power steering reservoir.
6. If a quick coupler is installed on the return hose, disconnect the power steering fluid return hose by removing the clamp.
7. Using a suitable plug, plug the power steering reservoir return pipe.
CAUTION: Fluid may leak.
NOTE: Plug all openings. Use new plugs.
8. Connect a suitable tube to the power steering return hose to drain the fluid.
CAUTION: Fluid may leak.
NOTE: Make sure the long tube is not bent, kinked, and properly secured with the clamps.
9. Install a suitable funnel on the power steering reservoir.
NOTE: A suitable funnel must have a volume of 4 liters and an O-ring.
NOTE: A suitable funnel must have a secure seal at the junction with the power steering reservoir to prevent leakage of fluid.
10. Raise the vehicle and place it on stands so that the wheels are just off the floor.
WARNING: It is forbidden to carry out work on a vehicle supported only by a jack. Be sure to place secure supports under the vehicle.
11. Using a suitable funnel, add the fluid recommended by the job to the power steering system. The liquid level must be maintained at 2/3 from the top of the funnel.
Steps 8 and 9 should be performed no more than 2 to 3 seconds apart. Failure to follow this instruction may result in damage to the power steering. Possible fluid leakage.
12. Flush the power steering system.
Possible fluid leakage. Do not allow the fluid level in the power steering reservoir to fall below the minimum mark. Failure to follow this instruction may result in damage to the power steering. After 4 liters of working fluid are poured into the power steering reservoir, the engine should be turned off.
13. Start the engine.
14. With the help of a partner, turn the steering wheel from one extreme position to another 3 times with an interval of approximately 5 seconds.
15. Continue flushing the hydraulic booster until 4 liters of working fluid enter the hydraulic booster reservoir. This takes approximately 30 seconds.
16. Remove the funnel.
CAUTION: Fluid may leak.
17. Disconnect the tube from the power steering return hose.
CAUTION: Fluid may leak.
18. If a quick coupler is installed on the return hose, connect the power steering fluid return hose by installing the clamp.
CAUTION: Fluid may leak.
NOTE: Mark the position of the clamp.
19. Install a new power steering fluid reservoir. For more information, see chapter: Power Steering Reservoir (211-02 Power steering, Removal and installation).
