When the parking brake lever is activated, the toothed sector turns and pulls the threaded rod and cable equalizer. The equalizer pulls the two parking brake cables and activates the two extensions at the same time. Moving the expander causes the upper and lower brake pads to rotate relative to the manual adjuster support. The brake pads come into contact with the brake drum against the force of the two return springs.
When the sector of the parking brake lever is turned, the teeth on the pawl come into contact with the corresponding teeth on the sector. In the activated position, the teeth of the pawl are held by a spring in engagement with the sector teeth to prevent the lever from being released.
When the parking brake is applied and the ignition is in power mode 6 (ignition) a microswitch connects the ground to the instrument panel and turns on the parking brake warning lamp. For more information, see chapter: Instrument panel (413-01 Instrument panel, Description and function).
When the button on the parking brake lever is pressed and the lever is moved to release the parking brake, the pawl teeth disengage from the sector teeth. When the parking brake lever is lowered, the parking brake cable closes the expander and the brake shoes are immediately retracted from the brake drum by two return springs.
When the parking brake lever reaches the fully released position, the microswitch opens to disconnect the electrical circuit to the instrument cluster. When the parking brake is released, the parking brake warning light is off.
