A1: Check rear parking brake cable for misadjustment
Perform the parking brake cable adjustment procedure. For more information, refer to: Parking Brake Cable Adjustment (206-05 Parking Brake and Parking Brake Actuator, General Procedures). Now the parking brake is applied correctly?
Yes - The car is correct.
No - GO to A2.
A2: Check parking brake pads for wear
Inspect the rear parking brake pads for excessive wear. Are the parking brake pads ok?
Yes - GO to A3.
No - INSTALL new parking brake pads. For more information refer to: Parking Brake Shoes (206-05 Parking brake and parking brake actuator, Removal and installation). Check the correct operation of the system.
A3: Checking the parking brake cables for damage
Inspect the parking brake cable components, cables, and sheaths for damage, rust, or chafing. Are the elements, cables and sheaths of the parking brake cables OK?
Yes - CHECK for other causes of failure, including the tightness of the parking brake lever or system components.
No - REPAIR or, if necessary, INSTALL new elements, cables and cable sheaths. For more information, refer to: Front Parking Brake Cable (206-05 Parking brake and parking brake actuator, Removal and installation) / Parking brake release actuator (206-05 Parking brake and parking brake actuator, Removal and installation). CHECK the system is working properly.
Pinpoint test B: Parking brake does not release
B1: Checking the parking brake cable lever
NOTE: Before checking, make sure the parking brake pads are properly adjusted.
- Raise and secure the vehicle with the parking brake fully applied. For more information, refer to: Vehicle lifting (100-02 Jacking and lifting the car on a lift, Description and principle of operation).
- Release the parking brake by pulling up on the lever and pressing the lock button.
Yes - CHECK for other causes of failure, such as parts of the service brake system. REPAIR or INSTALL new items as needed.
No - GO to B2.
B2: Checking the parking brake cables
Loosen the parking brake cable. Turn the wheels by hand. Do the rear wheels spin freely?
Yes - CHECK and, if necessary, INSTALL a new parking brake lever. For more information refer to: Parking brake control (206-05 Parking brake and parking brake actuator, Removal and installation). CHECK the system is working properly.
No - GO to B3.
B3: Checking the rear parking brake cables
Disconnect the rear parking brake cable from the vehicle and check for binding. Does the rear parking brake cable show signs of sticking?
Yes - INSTALL a new rear parking brake cable. For more information, refer to: Parking brake release actuator (206-05 Parking brake and parking brake actuator, Removal and installation). CHECK the system is working properly.
No - Check the parking brake components or the rear brake caliper for faults.
