Low speed windshield cleaning
Upon receipt of a request for low speed windshield wipers, the CJB energizes relay 11 in the BJB. When turned on, relay 11 supplies power to the changeover contacts of relay 8, which is also located in the CJB. Relay 8 is a fast/slow clear relay. When a low speed wipe is requested, relay 8 remains de-energized, causing current to flow through the switch contacts of the relay and to the low speed brush contacts of the windshield wiper motor.
High speed windshield cleaning
Upon receiving a request for high speed windshield wipers, the CJB energizes relay 11 and relay 8 in the BJB. When relay 11 is turned on, it supplies power to the changeover contacts of relay 8. When relay 8 is turned on, it supplies power to the high speed brush contacts of the windshield wiper motor.
Intermittent windshield cleaning
When a windshield wiper intermittent request is received, the CJB energizes relay 11 in the BJB to turn on the low speed wipers. The CJB software interprets the requested time delay and controls relay 11 accordingly.
The intermittent cleaning settings are sent over the LIN bus to the CJB, which equates them to the following time delays.
LIN bus signal | Time delay (seconds) |
1 | 22 |
2 | 15,5 |
3 | 9,5 |
4 | 6 |
5 | 3,5 |
6 | 1 |
In the event of a LIN bus failure between the CJB and the right multi-function steering column switch, the CJB will go into emergency operation (see below).
Automatic windshield cleaning
When a request is received to automatically operate the windshield wipers, the CJB interprets the messages received on the LIN bus from the rain sensor. Rain sensor messages on the LIN bus have values from 0 to 7. A signal value of 0 is interpreted by the CJB as no water on the windshield.
A signal value of 1 to 5 is interpreted by the CJB as a small amount of water on the windshield. In this case, the CJB initiates the low speed cleanup mode described in the section above "Low speed windshield cleaning".
A signal value of 6 to 7 is interpreted by the CJB as a large amount of water on the windshield. In this case, the CJB initiates the high-speed cleaning mode described in the section above "High speed windshield cleaning".
The sensitivity of the rain sensor can be adjusted by turning the rotary control on the right multifunction steering column switch to the desired position. There are 6 different sensitivity settings available, which are sent via the LIN bus to the CJB.
NOTE: If the rain sensor value is below 4, the CJB will only switch the high speed cleaning mode to the low speed cleaning mode.
One-time windshield cleaning
Upon receipt of a request for a one-time wipe, the CJB will turn on the windshield wipers as described in the section above "Low speed cleaning", until the request is removed.
Parking position of the windshield wipers
The windshield wiper park position switch is built into the windshield wiper motor. The park position switch ensures that the wipers return to the park position if the windshield wiper request is canceled midway.
The CJB is connected to one side of the parking switch. The park position switch contacts are open when the wipers are in any position other than the park position. As long as the switch contacts are open, the CJB continues to energize relays 11 and 8 in the BJB even if a request to stop the wipers is requested from the right multifunction steering column switch on the LIN bus.
When the wipers reach the park position, the park switch contacts close and a ground connection is made. When the CJB registers this ground connection, the CJB software detects that the wipers are in the park position and de-energizes relays 11 and 8 in the BJB.
Emergency wiper operation
In the event of a LIN bus failure between the CJB and the right multifunction steering column switch while the windshield wipers are active, the CJB will go into emergency operation. In emergency operation, the CJB only supplies power to the wipers for the low speed wipe mode.
Service position of windshield wipers
The wipers can be stopped at the windshield to make it easier to install new wipers. For more information, please contact "Operation manual".
Rear window cleaner
Upon receiving a request to operate the rear window wiper, the CJB energizes the RA2 relay in the AJB. When the relay is turned on, RA2 supplies power to the rear window wiper motor. The rear window wiper operates intermittently with a delay between wipes of approximately 6 seconds. The CJB controls the operation of the RA2 relay and therefore the operation of the rear window wiper motor.
The CJB also supplies power to the rear wiper motor park position switch. The park position switch is built into the rear wiper motor and allows the wiper to return to the park position if the rear wiper request is canceled midway. The park position switch contacts are closed when the rear window wiper is in any position other than the park position. This allows the CJB to return the rear window wiper to the park position when the RA2 relay is de-energized.
The CJB also supplies power to the rear wiper motor if reverse gear is engaged while the windshield wipers are running. On vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, the reverse gear signal is generated by the transmission control module (TCM). The TCM transmits the reverse gear signal on the high speed CAN bus to the CJB, which in turn turns on the rear window wiper.
On vehicles equipped with a manual transmission, the reverse gear signal is generated by the reverse gear switch. The reverse gear switch is hardwired to the CJB.
Windshield washers
When a windshield washer request is received, the CJB energizes the windshield washer control relay. This supplies battery power to the washer pump. The ground connection of the pump is provided by a de-energized rear window washer control relay. Both washer control relays are built into the CJB.
When prompted to turn on the windshield washer, the windshield washers will be turned on. After the washer switch is pressed, the CJB will delay the wipers on for 100ms. If the switch is pressed for less than 100ms, the CJB will not turn on the wipers.
The CJB will supply power to the windshield wipers as long as there is a request to turn on the washers, even though the washers will go into idle state after 10 seconds. After releasing the washer switch, the CJB will turn on the windshield wipers for 2 additional wipe cycles.
Rear window washer
When a request is received to turn on the rear window washer, the CJB energizes the rear window washer control relay. This supplies battery power to the washer pump. The ground connection of the pump is provided by a de-energized windshield washer control relay. Pump polarity reversal (see above "Windshield washers") allows you to direct the washer fluid to both the rear window washer nozzle and the windshield washer nozzles. The rear window washer nozzle is integrated into the upper auxiliary brake light.
If requested continuously, the rear window washer will operate for up to 10 seconds. When a request is made to turn on the rear window washer, the rear window wiper will operate continuously until the switch is released. After releasing the switch, or after 10 seconds of continuous operation, the CJB will turn on the rear window wiper for another 2-3 additional wipe cycles.
Headlight washer
When the vehicle is in ignition mode from 4 (food accessories) up to 7 (engine operation), the first request to wash the windshield longer than 100ms will also wash the headlights. The CJB will then start a 10 minute timer. If there are 5 requests to turn on the windshield washer during this 10 minute period, the CJB will turn on the headlight washers on the fifth request. In this case, the 10-minute timer is reset to 0.
If the CJB does not receive requests to operate the windshield washer during this 10 minute period, the headlight washers will operate on the first request received after 10 minutes. After turning on the headlight washers, the CJB resets the timer to 0.
The headlight washers only work when the headlights are on. CJB receives signal "lighting on" via the LIN bus from the lighting control module.
When the headlight washers are required, the CJB energizes relay 9 in the BJB, which supplies battery voltage to the headlight washer pump. The ground connection of the pump is provided by a de-energized relay 12, which is also located in the BJB. This sequence supplies fluid to the headlight 1 injectors.
After this sequence, the pump power is reversed. The CJB de-energizes relay 9 and energizes relay 12. This supplies fluid to headlight 2 injectors. The sequence is as follows:
- Power supply to headlight washer 1 - 500 ms
- Power delay to headlight washer 2 - 100 ms
- Power to headlight washer 2 - 500 ms
- Delay (soaking time) power supply to the headlight washer 1 - 700 ms
- Power supply to headlight washer 1 - 500 ms
- Power delay to headlight washer 2 -100 ms
- Power to headlight washer 2 - 500 ms
If there is less than 1 liter of washer fluid left in the washer fluid reservoir, the CJB will temporarily stop the headlight washers. The fluid level sensor is hard-wired to the CJB, which also sends a low fluid level signal to the instrument cluster via the medium speed CAN bus. For more information, see the chapter:
