The wiper linkage includes a main tube with swivel assemblies at each end. The wiper motor is centrally mounted on the main pipe and acts directly on a pair of tie rods. The rods convert the rotational motion of the electric motor into linear, reciprocating motion.
The rods are connected to the main pipe by means of cranks at each end. The cranks convert the linear, reciprocating motion of the rods into a rotational, reciprocating motion of the rotary assemblies. Due to this, the reciprocating movement of the wiper blades on the windshield is carried out.
The wiper linkage and motor assembly are one piece and must be removed or replaced as a unit. For more information, refer to the chapter: Windshield Wiper Motor (501-16 Windshield wipers and washers, Removal and installation).
