The front seat base is made from high strength extruded steel and is designed to withstand loads in excess of current legal strength requirements. The seat base is shaped to prevent diving under the seat belt to help keep the occupant in the seat during a frontal collision. The seat back is made of high strength steel and has a wire suspension system for increased comfort. The backrest is attached to both sides of the seat base with a high strength steel bracket and hinge.
Dual-stiffness molded sections and molded foam are nested inside the seat and back base to shape the cushion and back. The design of the seats provides support, comfort and an ergonomic position for driver and passenger.
The driver and front passenger seats have additional safety features. The driver's seat is equipped with a seat position sensor, the front passenger seat is equipped with a seat load classification sensor (depending on vehicle specification) and a system for determining the load on the passenger seat. The driver's and front passenger's seat security components provide inputs to control the deployment of the airbags and seat belt pretensioners.
For more information, see chapter: Airbag and Pretensioner Restraint System (SRS) (501-20B Secondary Restraint System Description and Operation).
The front seat belt buckles are integrated into the seats to provide improved occupant attachment and retention. For more information, see the chapter: Seat belt system (501-20A Seat belt system, Description and operation).
