The interior rear-view mirror is dimmed manually or automatically, electrically. Some vehicles have an interior humidity sensor built into the power mirror housing.
Manual dimming mirror
The manual dimming mirror consists of prismatic glass enclosed in a housing that is mounted on the mirror arm with a ball joint.
To dim the mirror manually, use the lever located on the back of the mirror housing. Using the lever, the mirror is moved from "daytime" provisions in "nocturnal".
Auto dimming mirror
The auto-dimming mirror consists of electrochromatic glass enclosed in a housing that is mounted on the mirror arm with a ball joint. The mirror bracket has an 8-pin electrical connector connected to the ceiling panel wiring harness. This wiring harness provides hard connection and LAN interconnection (LIN) with CJB.
Light sensors are mounted in the front and rear of the mirror housing. Sensors control the auto-dimming function to reduce the glare from the headlights of cars behind you.
The auto dimming function is permanently active when the ignition is set to power mode 4 (food accessories) and in power mode 6 (ignition). The forward-facing light sensor monitors the level of ambient light in front of the vehicle, while the rear-facing light sensor monitors the light behind the vehicle. When the light level behind the vehicle exceeds the background light level in front of the vehicle, the auto-dimming circuit darkens the surface of the interior rearview mirror.
Auto-dimming is deactivated when reverse gear is selected to give the driver the clearest possible view. On automatic transmission vehicles, the reverse gear select signal is provided by the TCM via the high speed CAN bus to the CJB. The CJB then energizes the mirror motor. On vehicles with a manual transmission, the reverse gear selection signal comes from the transmission switch,
Interior humidity sensor
Depending on the specification of the vehicle, the auto-dimming mirror can also be fitted with an interior humidity sensor. The humidity sensor is located at the rear of the mirror housing, next to the windshield, and provides information to the ATC module about the likelihood of windshield fogging. This information is used to correct the automatic operation of the climate control system. For more information, see the chapter: Control Components (412-01 Climate control, Description and principle of operation).
