A tubular steel cross beam is integrated into the instrument panel. The energy-saving unit is bolted to the transverse beam on the driver's side. The energy-absorbing unit consists of 2 calculated-deformable brackets welded to the cross brace. NAS vehicles are also equipped with one energy-absorbing bracket that is bolted to the cross member on the passenger side.
At the center of the cross member is a cast magnesium alloy structure that provides support and mounting points for the center console. A steering column support, also made of magnesium alloy, is mounted on the cross member on the driver's side. The cross member also serves as the fulcrum for the dual-stage passenger airbag.
For more information, see chapter: Airbag and Pretensioner Restraint System (SRS) (501-20B Secondary Restraint System Description and Operation).
The instrument panel consists of 2 molded plastic elements (upper and lower), welded together and forming a single knot. The instrument panel provides installation points for various driver and passenger interfaces. In addition, distribution air ducts, deflectors and dampers are provided on the instrument panel. For more information, see the chapter: Air distribution and purification (412-01 Climate control, Description and principle of operation).
