General information
Human fixation systems (SRS) are additional active protection of vehicle occupants in case of serious collisions. The components of the system are airbags and seat belt pretensioners, which are automatically activated as soon as the sensors recognize a serious frontal impact.
The pyrotechnic components of the SRS system can be potentially hazardous to maintenance personnel if handled improperly. The following instructions are intended to familiarize service personnel with the hazards involved in working with the SRS system and to explain the importance of ensuring that the SRS components installed on the vehicle are in good working order.
To ensure reliable operation of the SRS system, periodic inspections and maintenance are necessary.
In the relevant sections "Guides" we have taken extra precautions. All instructions must be read prior to system repair.
WARNING: Always follow the rules for working with the SRS system and the prescribed service and repair procedures. Personnel authorized to work with the SRS system must receive special training and have copies of the rules for working with the SRS system.
WARNING: It is forbidden to carry out any work on the SRS system before reading the relevant sections of the Manual.
WARNING: The airbag module contains sodium compounds which are toxic and extremely flammable. Any contact with water, acids or heavy metals may cause an explosion or other negative consequences. Do not disassemble, incinerate, or electrocute unactivated airbags.
WARNING: A seat belt that has been critically stressed during a collision or shows signs of failure must be replaced with a new one.
WARNING: Disconnect the battery before carrying out any electrical welding on a vehicle equipped with SRS.
WARNING: Do not expose the airbag module or seat belt pretensioner to temperatures exceeding 85°C.
It should be noted that precautions are not limited to SRS system repair and maintenance operations. The same precautions should be taken when working with other systems and components located in the vicinity of the SRS components, the list of which includes, but is not limited to, the following elements:
- Steering - Driver's frontal airbag, rotary contactor
- Control Panel - front passenger airbag (if installed), the SRS control unit located behind the center console on the transmission tunnel, below the climate control unit.
- front seats - front seat belt pretensioners integrated in the seat belt buckles.
- electrical equipment - SRS wiring harnesses, connecting wires and connectors
Follow all safety regulations when working on the airbag system.
Before working on the SRS system or in close proximity to the location of its components, secure the system by performing the following operations.
- Remove the key from the ignition lock.
- Disconnect both terminals on the battery, first "negative" terminal.
- Wait 10 minutes for the SRS control module backup circuit to de-energize.
Backup capacitors are used to power the SRS system, which ensure the operation of the system in the event of a power failure during an accident. Sufficient time must elapse for the capacitors to fully discharge (10 minutes). This will eliminate the possibility of accidental operation of the system.
WARNING: Always remove both battery terminals before working on the airbag system. Disconnect the negative terminal first. Never mix up the wires when connecting to the battery.
