Rotary contactor of the airbag system (Freelander 1)

Dismantling

WARNING: It is forbidden to carry out any work on the SRS system before reading the relevant sections of the Manual.

1. Follow all safety rules when working with the airbag system.

GENERAL INFORMATION, Airbag and seat belt pretensioner regulations.

CAUTION: Before disconnecting the steering components, set the wheels to the straight-ahead position and lock the steering wheel. Turning the steering wheel will damage the SRS rotary contactor.

2. Remove the steering wheel.

STEERING, Steering gear, Steering wheel.

CAUTION: After removing the steering wheel, fix the rotary contactor with adhesive tape.

3. Remove the top and bottom parts of a casing of a steering column.

STEERING, Steering gear, Steering column cover.

4. Disconnect the 2 electrical connectors from the rotary contactor assembly.

5. Loosen the 4 screws and remove the rotary contactor.

CAUTION: Do not disassemble the rotary contactor. It is a non-maintenance item and should be replaced with a single unit.

Installation

1. Make sure the rotary contactor is in the center position. To center the rotary contactor, carefully turn it clockwise or counter-clockwise until a white segment appears on the indicator wheel.

CAUTION: Make sure the front wheels are in the straight ahead position.

2. Install the rotary contactor and fix it with screws.

3. Connect the electrical connectors to the rotary contactor.

4. Establish the top and bottom parts of a casing of a steering column.
