Device and technical description 4.0L (Discovery 3)
Starter power is 1.8 kW. The starter has the third level of tightness according to the Denso standard. In the RA type starter, the traction relay is located directly behind the gear, which increases the reliability of the gear engagement with the flywheel ring. The starter rotor is in direct engagement with the gear. The starter design includes an electric motor with sequential excitation and constant meshing of the rotor, as well as a freewheel (overrunning clutch). The starter motor is ventilated by a labyrinth breather that provides sealing and fluid removal.
Power is supplied to the starter traction relay at the command of the engine control unit (ECM), when the ignition key is turned to the engine start position. Upon receiving a request to start the engine, the ECM checks the ignition key code authority and only then gives permission to crank the crankshaft.
Power is supplied to the starter via the power bus directly from the positive terminal of the battery. The power bus is mounted on a copper stud with a nut and a special washer that prevents the bus from turning when the nut is tightened.
The starter is located on the rear of the cylinder block on the left side. The starter motor is attached to the cylinder block and protrudes towards the ring gear through a window in the flywheel housing.
