Six counterweights provide low vibration from a four-crank crankshaft mounted on five bearings. The cast iron crankshaft also features internal and rolled fillets for added strength.
The crankshaft rear oil seal is pressed into the junction of the base plate and cylinder block.
Aluminum/tin split plain bearings are used as main bearings. An oil groove at the top of each bearing supplies oil to the crankshaft to lubricate the connecting rod bearings. There is an aluminum/tin thrust washer on both sides of the top of the center main bearing.
Base plate
The base plate is a structural casting. It bolts to the bottom of the cylinder block and holds the crankshaft in place. The use of a base plate increases rigidity. Iron inserts, located in the casting under the main bearing supports, minimize the change in clearance in the bearings as a result of thermal expansion.
Two hollow pins ensure the alignment of the base plate and the cylinder block.
The junction of the base plate with the cylinder block is sealed with sealant.
Oil pan
The embossed aluminum alloy oil pan is bolted to the base plate. An aerodynamic sump attached to the underside of the base plate isolates the sump from air disturbances resulting from crankshaft rotation to prevent oil aeration and improve oil flow. A rubber plug at the rear of the embossed sump blocks access to the torque converter mounting bolts. The engine drain plug is located in the right front corner of the oil pan.
The junction of the embossed oil pan and the base plate is sealed with sealant.
Oil pump
The oil pump is mounted on the crankshaft at the front of the engine. The inlet and outlet ports of the pump are located opposite the oil grooves in the base plate.
