Review
Three headlight options available: halogen, bi-xenon or adaptive front lighting system (AFS).
Refer to section 417-00 for a detailed description of system design and operation «External lighting fixtures» in the workshop manual.
Because there is a risk of injury, be sure to observe the following safety precautions.
Safety information
WARNING: Xenon headlight systems can have voltages of up to 28,000 V. Be sure to switch off the headlights before working on them. Failure to follow this instruction may result in injury.
The following precautions must be observed when working on the xenon headlight system:
1. It is FORBIDDEN to carry out any work on the xenon headlight system with the lights on.
2. Work with xenon lamps only with the use of personal protective equipment such as gloves and goggles. Do not touch the glass bulb of the lamp.
3. Disposal of xenon lamps must be carried out according to the rules for the disposal of hazardous waste.
4. You can turn on the lamp only when it is in the installed position, in the reflector.
Full instructions for prescribed xenon headlight system repair procedures are given in Section 100-00 "General information, standard operating procedures" manuals for service stations.
Inspection and verification
1. Make sure the customer's complaint is valid.
Be aware that intermittent fault messages may be due to the cycling nature of the FETs (FET).
2. Visually inspect for obvious mechanical and electrical problems.
Mechanical factors | Electrical Factors |
3. If an obvious cause of a problem you identified or described by a customer is found, resolve it before proceeding to the next steps (if possible).
4. Use an approved diagnostic system or scan tool (tester), to retrieve all DTCs before referring to the symptom table or DTC index (DTC).
Since DTCs are stored in more than one module, a complete vehicle data readout is recommended.
Clear all DTCs after troubleshooting.
Symptom table
Symptom | Possible reasons | Action |
Lamp (s) low beam headlight not working / lamp (s) high beam headlight not working | Check the condition of the lamp and fuse (see visual inspection table). Check headlight circuits. Check the operation of the light switch. Check the operation of the left multifunction switch on the steering column. Refer to the electrical manual. Check for DTCs that indicate a problem with the headlight or its associated electrical circuit.
Dim lamp light (s) low beam / lamp (s) high beam headlights not working | Check the condition and power of the lamp. Check that the left-hand or right-hand traffic selector lever is correctly installed. Check headlight circuits. Check the operation of the light switch. Check the operation of the left multifunction switch on the steering column. Refer to the electrical manual.
Lamp (s) low beam headlights constantly on / lamp (s) high beam headlights stay on | Check headlight circuits. Check the operation of the light switch. Check the operation of the left multifunction switch on the steering column. Check the operation of the headlight timer function. Refer to the electrical manual. Check for DTCs that indicate a malfunction in the headlight circuit.
The high/low beam switch function does not work | Check headlight circuits. Check the operation of the left multifunction switch on the steering column. Check the operation of the xenon headlight breaker mechanism. Refer to the electrical manual. Check for DTCs that indicate a malfunction in the headlight circuit.
Pilot lamp (s) does not work | Check fuse (And) (see visual inspection). Check the operation of the light switch. Check the operation of the left multifunction switch on the steering column. Check the test lamp electrical circuits. Refer to the electrical manual. Check for DTCs that indicate a problem with the instrument panel or CAN system. |
DTC index
NOTE: Universal Scan Tools cannot read the listed codes or can only read 5-digit codes. Match the 5 digits from the scan tool with the first 5 digits of the listed 7 digit code to identify the problem (the last 2 digits give additional information read by the diagnostic system approved by the manufacturer).
