Symptom | Possible reasons | Action |
Steering wobble | Check for excessive travel or play in the steering system with the engine running. Check for play in several different steering positions. Perform steering geometry and wheel alignment checks. Refer to the relevant section in the workshop manual.
Steering is left or right | Incorrect steering geometry adjustment | Perform steering geometry and wheel alignment checks using four wheel alignment equipment. Refer to section 204-00 "Suspension system - general information" in the workshop manual. Make sure the direction of rotation is correct for the position on the vehicle (when directional tires are installed) |
Jerks / periodic increase in the required effort when turning the steering wheel from lock to lock. Steering is perceived as tight and does not provide self-centering. | Disconnect the steering gear from the suspension. Check for freedom of movement in the suspension. Disconnect the steering column from the steering gear. Check the steering column and universal joints for freedom of movement. Check the steering gear for freedom of movement. Repair if necessary.
Noisy hydraulic power steering | Check and, if necessary, add the prescribed power steering fluid. Refer to section 204-00 "Suspension system - general information" in the workshop manual. Check for fluid contamination. Drain the reservoir and visually inspect the filter for clogging/clogging. Repair/replace as needed. Check for air infiltration into the system. Check the power steering hoses for kinks or reduced capacity. Repair if necessary.
Noise in the power steering pump | Check and, if necessary, top up the power steering fluid. Refer to section 204-00 "Suspension system - general information" in the workshop manual. Check for fluid contamination. Drain the reservoir and visually inspect the filter for clogging/clogging. Repair/replace as needed. Check for excessive pump noise. Repair if necessary.
Noise in steering gear | Check and, if necessary, top up the power steering fluid. Refer to the relevant section in the workshop manual. Check for fluid contamination. Check for excessive steering noise. Repair if necessary.
Noise in the steering column | Dirty steering column or lack of lubrication in the steering universal joints | Check the steering column and its universal joints. Repair if necessary. |
The steering feels tighter than it should be across its entire operating range. Steering feels too light when driving at high speed. Steering feels too tight when driving at low speeds and when the vehicle is stationary. | Insufficient Gain | Check the power steering pump pressure. Check the steering column for damage and make sure it can rotate freely |
