Inspection and verification (Discovery 3)

1. Make sure the customer's complaint is justified. If a road test is required, check that the condition of the vehicle allows for a safe test.

2. Visually inspect for obvious mechanical and electrical problems.

Check the correct tire pressure, size and tread pattern Check for tire and wheel rim damage Check wheel alignment Check power steering fluid level and hydraulic drive for oil leaks Check the condition and tension of the power steering pump drive belt Check the power steering pump for looseness, wear, damage and excessive noise Check the steering gear assembly for damage, wear and tightness Check hydraulic and coolant lines for damage and correct wiring Check the steering joints for damage, excessive clearance, wear and tightness Check the steering column and steering joints for damage, excessive clearance, wear and tightness

3. If an obvious cause of a problem that you identified or described by the customer is found, resolve it before proceeding to the next steps (if possible).

NOTE: Universal Scan Tools cannot read the listed codes or can only read 5-digit codes. Match the 5 digits from the scan tool with the first 5 digits of the listed 7 digit code to identify the problem (the last 2 digits give additional information read by the diagnostic system approved by the manufacturer).

Use an approved diagnostic system or scan tool (tester), to retrieve all DTCs before referring to the symptom table or DTC index (DTC).

Since DTCs are stored in more than one module, a complete vehicle data readout is recommended.

Clear all DTCs after troubleshooting.
