Centralized door locking (cdl) - from model year 2002
Central door locking system (CDL) is a new feature for the 2002 Defender.
NOTE: CDL affects all doors on vehicles with a "station wagon" and on County vehicles with a body "station wagon". On all other 2002 model year Defenders, the CDL only affects the driver's and front and rear passenger doors.
CDL affects all doors, including the tailgate, and is controlled by pressing the corresponding button on the remote control, turning the vehicle key in the driver's door lock, or using the lock button on the driver's door.
CDL system actuates latches (with electric drive) on doors that are controlled by the anti-theft alarm ECU located behind the instrument panel. The anti-theft ECU receives constant electrical power from fuse 6 located in the fuse box in the passenger compartment. Each CDL latch motor is connected by two wires to the theft deterrent ECU, which alternately supplies power and provides ground to drive each motor into the locked or unlocked positions.
If the latch motors are operated continuously for a short period of time, the anti-theft ECU will delay the operation of all CDL latch motors for 15 seconds to prevent the motors from overheating. But before suspending operation, the anti-theft ECU must ensure that all doors are unlocked.
If the vehicle is locked and the key is in the ignition switch, or the ignition is turned on and the anti-theft alarm ECU inertia switch is activated, all doors are immediately unlocked and the hazard warning lights come on. To prevent accidental re-locking, the motors of all latches are locked and remain in this state until the theft deterrent ECU «will feel», that the driver's door is opened with the key removed from the ignition switch.
Locking the car with the remote control is disabled when the key is in the ignition switch.
Locking when the door slams shut
With the introduction of the CDL system, the driver's door slam function has been eliminated. When an attempt is made to lock the vehicle, the anti-theft alarm ECU will unlock all doors.
Controlling the CDL with the lock button on the driver's door
Each door has a lock button that allows you to individually lock a specific door from inside the vehicle. The lock button on the driver's door has an additional feature that allows you to lock all doors from inside the vehicle using this button.
When the lock button on the driver's door is pressed, the CDL system enters a lock state where all doors are locked, but the immobilizer and the perimeter and interior anti-theft sensors are inoperative. The CDL mode, which uses the lock button on the driver's door, can be activated with or without the key in the ignition switch and without turning on the ignition.
If the CDL system is in lock button lock mode and the lock button on the remote control is pressed, the volume and perimeter components of the anti-theft alarm system and the engine immobilizer are activated.
CDL management with a key
The driver's and front passenger's doors are equipped with cylinder locks. Turning the vehicle key in the passenger's door locks or unlocks only that specific door. Turning the key in the driver's door affects the CDL system and unlocks or locks all doors.
NOTE: The passenger door lock cylinder is connected to the door latch and is not electrically connected to the anti-theft alarm ECU. The lock cylinder in the driver's door is also connected to the door latch and its operation is controlled by the ECU only with the latch motor and two wires connected to it.
When the vehicle is locked with the key through the driver's door, only the CDL and perimeter security functions are activated. Surround protection and active immobilizer are not activated.
Controlling the CDL with a remote control
There are two buttons on the remote control - locking and unlocking. One press of the lock button locks all doors and activates the perimeter and surround protection functions and the active immobilizer. Keypad locking is disabled if the transponder coil «feels», that the key is in the ignition switch.
When the car is locked, a single press on the unlock button unlocks all doors and disables the perimeter and surround security. The immobilizer is disabled only when using the transponder coil and remote control or performing the EKA procedure.
Anti-theft LED
In addition to the status signals of the anti-theft alarm system, the corresponding LED also indicates the status of the CDL system.
The system confirms that the driver's door is open by turning on the LED for 10 seconds (confirmation period). If another door or hood is opened, the LED remains off for a 10 second confirmation period. After the 10 second confirmation period, if the alarm is active, the LED will return to slow warning flashing.
Interior lighting functionality
The theft alarm ECU controls the interior lighting functionality. When the lamps go out, they gradually change to the state "turned off" within a 2 second period.
Lighting on:
- When disabling the alarm with the remote control,
- When opening any door.
When the light is on, it will turn off as a result of the following:
- If all doors are closed, the lights will turn off after a 15 second delay.
- If any door is left open, the lights will turn off after an 8 minute delay.
- If one of the delay periods described above is in effect and the ignition is turned on or the alarm is activated, the lights will turn off.
